Bulgaria vs England racism in European Qualifier: Managers have their say
Managers have shared their perspectives and also had his own say whether Gareth Southgate would have been justified in allowing his players to roam off the pitch at Sofia.
Jurgen Klopp:We did not speak about it, and the players did not come up with it. I thought they dealt well with the circumstance. It was like there wasnt any game after everyone spoke about it. Truly there was a game, and that the response that is sensational was shown by the players . You wish to reveal the response and can make them endure in the way.
In the end its not important who strikes first, it is important who laughs and it was obviously the England players. There was no impact on the performance and the rest we do not need to talk [about], its disgusting. No one wants to hear that and watch that.
Steven Gerrard:I was very proud. I thought they handled themselves Harry Kane revealed Gareth and enormous leadership well. It was disgusting, it was a disgrace. I thought they did the ideal thing winning the match and staying and proving a point like that. But I also thought they handled the protocol and their responsibilities out there unbelievably well.
For an Englishman and an ex-player I had been so proud. Ive been in the place myself with Rhian Brewster using Liverpool U19s and I feel that the important thing in the time is to listen to the players and what they would like to do and react from that point.
Pep Guardiola:I think UEFA made a step forward. The match was stopped by them three times or twice. Fight every day with this circumstance. Everything we are currently doing or will do to help to eradicate it is welcome. The players and director are not alone, everybody is concerned. Whatever we decidewe can perform.
Brendan Rodgers:I thought Gareth and his staff and players were great. Theyve made it crystal clear that theres likely to be a stance. Weve not seen them set in position although weve heard about sanctions. Within this society, players should never have to be vulnerable to that.
I was pleased watching themwhen I watched a bunch of young guys fighting for their team-mates that were being abused. I felt proud watching it this could be the start of a stance as were currently trying to eliminate [it]. Hopefully, that can be the beginning. It is something that we can not stand for.
Frank Lampard on his own experience:I went with England in specific parts of Europe and felt what we all felt, and possibly didnt speak about sufficient. I believe the organisations finally have to create a huge thing and the body, I dont think players should be relied on to be making steps.
How England dealt by it, from manager through staff was something really good to see. Its not the end of the story but I believe it indicates that we are moving in the right direction and it has to carry on.
Eddie Howe:Personally I dont believe Id have completed [taken players from this pitch]. I believe playing the sport and doing and showing your abilities that are best is the perfect means. I believe that the players want to play with and I think that showed.
It is only my view but I really dont believe you need to see the game stopped and virtually allow that vile abuse to win, but it is a huge subject of conversation and everyone is going to have a different opinion, thats only my ideas.
Roy Hodgson:I thought they were fantastic. I thought they did everything right. I really dont know if anything could have been gained by these coming off the pitch. When people are trying to upset you like this by racially abusing you, in certain ways you can not get a much better method than England beating them as they did, however I still dont think there would have been some more publicity.
Nuno Espirito Santo:I believe in football, the institutions and governments have to do everything that they could to completely eliminate racism, but it is a social problem. But with footballs durability and strength, I believe I support. Until now it isnt as individuals stopped by us, it is going to continue. I hope and truly believe together with all the next generations its going to be .
Graham Potter:I didnt see the game to be honest but pretty similar to everybody else [I think] its sad, really sad. Unfortunately its a society issue as much since its a football difficulty but it is something we dont want to see naturally. And obviously as a club are totally supportive of any campaign to educate and make sure we do not need to witness these sort of occasions.
Ralph Hasenhuttl:I think that its absolutely the right thing to demonstrate a quite difficult shoulder for racism. If supporters reveal this habit it is something that which you need to be very, very hard the only means to stop it I think would be to be as difficult as you can against countries, nightclubs or teams against. Dont deny it, do not look away, look It in the eye and say,it is not alright, it must alter. As its a stage where you could demonstrate this and we must be quite rigorous and very hard to keep this out of the scene.
Mauricio Pochettino talking Harry Kanes conduct as captain in Sofia:Of course when youre on the touchline you want to comprehend the players constantly have rights and it is tough to be in their place, know how they feel if they suffer abuse such as this. That is why I will always support my own players.
Harry handled everything perfectly, I wish to congratulate him. He was calm, the scenario was under control. He demonstrated great maturity in these types of situations which arent always easy to control.
Dean Smith praised Tyrone Mings for making his England debut in these challenging circumstances:He has come back and educated, got on with things as normal and not really said a lot about it. I can only sing his praises. As soon as we go and look at gamers and talk to them we know what they are likely to attract football-wise, but its that character about. Me and JT went to meet him he impressed us. Having met with him, brought him here on loan and signed him we have seen him daily and it doesnt surprise me he handled the situation. He is articulate, intelligent and a very good human being too.
