Charlie Nicholas returns along with his predictions for the clubs this week, getting Europa League campaigns along with their Champions League under way.
You will find nine British clubs involved with the contests this year, including Liverpool, who want to defend their Champions League title.
And Soccer Saturday’s Charlie has awarded his predictions for the upcoming fixtures…
This is going to be a fantastic check for the Champions League holders. We watched a side at the weekend again, conceding after just seven minutes from Newcastle. This is not the point, although they won and have walked away.
Is unbelievable. He doesn’t get the aims that Mohamed Salah gets has the pace which Sadio Mane does however he has skill and cunning. He is a team player and is my favorite out of those three, my favorite even though he could be a lot easier to mark than another two.
Liverpool haven’t improved in midfield. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is a fringe player. Those three have to be in their match to win games although we all know they’re a good side.
Napoli are all-action and incredibly strong at home, but not convincing away from house. Dries Mertens rocks up and does this job. Targets that are big are got by him and I expect him to grab another during the week.
CHARLIE PREDICTS: 2-1 (10/1 with Sky Bet)
The performances of Mason Mount are remarkable although tammy Abraham’s aims are colossal. England U21 players have scored all 11 Premier League goals thus far which is remarkable. I was incorrect although I believed they would be in trouble. They have speed and good energy up front. It is an expansive way of playing for Frank Lampard.
Their manager was sacked by valencia and I do not see them being flamboyant. They will try to counter-attack which will allow it to be hard for Mount and Abraham to understand.
CHARLIE PREDICTS: 1-0 (6/1 with Sky Bet)
This is an embarrassing one. Tottenham were rather impressive in the first half against Crystal Palace, which allowed them to facilitate down to next gear in the second half. They retained hold of Christian Eriksen and so things have calmed down a little. He started Palace, so is that why it’s calmed down?
Mauricio Pochettino has shifted his group too much and that is why they look vulnerable in the back. These are teams to journey to, but this can be an embarrassing trip although I’d envision Tottenham would attempt to control possession. Tottenham are unpredictable.
CHARLIE PREDICTS: 1-1 (11/2 with Sky Bet)
Manchester City discovered this one difficult past season. Shakhtar have constantly brought in a little bit of pedigree but that is becoming less and less as the years progress. They aren’t quite getting those titles anymore and it takes the creative capability they were once dangerous with. They aren’t quite sure maybe not or whether they ought to be contesting.
City will be badly winded after the Norwich game. Aymeric Laporte is a miss for them. I don’t know Pep Guardiola chose to depart Kevin de Bruyne out at the weekend. This will be a comfortable win to acquire back the Premier League winners on the right course.
CHARLIE PREDICTS: 0-4 (12/1 with Sky Bet)
God knows what defence Unai Emery can select. I really don’t know how often we’ll need to say it. They are very great going forward, as would be the kids. It’s scary how awful Arsenal are, although the balance from midfield to front isn’t bad either.
What is the attraction to Sokratis Papastathopoulos? Kieran Tierney on Thursday and I would play and see if Hector Bellerin could start. Regarding Sunday’s match against Watford, when you see David Luiz giving instructions with 20 minutes ahead, you know you’re in trouble.
Konstantinos Mavropanos remains game time away from being healthy. It would be the conclusion if Shkodran Mustafi was brought backagain. We need to have Bellerin, Rob Holding and then Tierney back into the side. I would take a hit and play these players to give game time to them and allow them to get match fitness.
Nicolas Pepe was dreadful against Watford. How Emery shot Mesut Ozil along with Dani Ceballos off was past me. It is beginning to influence some of the young players and Ainsley Maitland-Niles. Joe Willock and reiss Nelson arrived and could not retain the ball.
It is the responsibility of the manager. This must be resolved by him and develop a conclusion on how to sort out this. Tierney, Bellerin, and Holding should play I would play with them and take a defeat when it meant they got.
CHARLIE PREDICTS: 2-2 (12/1 with Sky Bet)
Astana will come and’park the bus’. Manchester United were not brilliant in the weekend, but it was a fabulous result – they almost stumbled however it is all about getting yourselves the three points, in what was once a match, and they did not.
It will not create a difference that Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard were missing – . That is just another game where they will get in comfortable fashion, on the line although It’s not convincing with United.
CHARLIE PREDICTS: 2-0 (5/1 with Sky Bet)
Nuno Espirito Santo will want to get one over on the side. Braga are dangerous but don’t travel well. Are caught up in the emotion of this Europa League? They even took their foot off the pedal in Premier League because they had been thumped from Chelsea.
They had been blown away at weekend and make many errors and also it was really unlike these to concede five. They will need to return to basics and get a win in in the Premier League, however this will be taken by Nuno seriously and that I anticipate Wolves to be powerful here, getting off to a fine start in the group stages.
CHARLIE PREDICTS: 2-0 (6/1 with Sky Bet)
Rennes have started very well in Ligue 1. I hope that M’Baye Niang won’t be enjoying. He is lightning fast, almost a version of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. These guys move and can play, and that is what Celtic fight against.
Celtic will be helpful about the counter-attack, however their standing is the same. They get scared when they go away from home. They don’t understand where to throw their defence and whether to play with a squeezing game or not. They pace out wide and will have players that are technically gifted. Celtic will not threaten here and nevertheless have defensive injuries.
CHARLIE PREDICTS: 2-1 (17/2 with Sky Bet)
This will be a fiery game. Feyenoord have a solid reputation. Feyenoord have the fire but aren’t bringing the assistance they would always attract. Rangers enjoy these nights and that is exactly the reason why Steven Gerrard is there. They haven’t clicked into gear just yet though. Jaap Stam’s negative will sit in for 20-25 minutes and frustration could be caused by this around Ibrox – .
Alfredo Morelos is the danger and Feyenoord will be winding up him to see if they can get him. He looks a lot calmer than that which he has been in the past! It’s not an easy night. It’ll be stressed and quite physical. If Rangers quite have the knowledge to make it through these games I really don’t know.
CHARLIE PREDICTS: 1-1 (5/1 with Sky Bet)
