Johnny Sexton injury played down by Joe Schmidt after Ireland Rugby World Cup win
Ireland head coach Joe Schmidt has insisted Johnny Sexton would benice to confront Samoa regardless of the fly-half icing his troublesome thigh after being withdrawn from the 35-0 win over Russia.
Sexton captained Ireland for the very first time but was replaced by Jack Carty for the second half of his side defeat of the Bears.
Irish and british Lions fly-half Sexton had declared himself 100 percent fit to take on Russia after missing the shock 19-12 loss to Japan of Ireland with a thigh complaint.
However, Schmidt still believes Sexton will be all set for Ireland Pool A encounter in Fukuoka on Saturday, October 12.
Schmidt anticipates both men to be prepared for the Samoans, although joey Carbery has been a late withdrawal, using endured another ankle complaint.
Johnnys all good and will be OK for Samoa, and Joey is good, Schmidt said following the triumph over Russia.
I think Joey wouldve been fine to play with, however, Conor Murray was really keen to play. So Joey is hopefully fine.
As Ireland secured a vital win over 25, Garry Ringrose, Peter OMahony, Rhys Ruddock, Andrew Conway and rob Kearney spanned.
The victory puts back Ireland with a win over Samoa all that is required to be eligible for the eight.
Jordi Murphy lasted only 26 minutes with a rib difficulty before departing, having only arrived in Japan in midweek to substitute the injured Jack Conan.
Before understanding he will return to fitness ireland will await an update on the Ulster celebrity.
Jordi only got thrown in the ribsso he might have popped there. Were just going to have out him, explained Schmidt. So we will see what that comes like.
And Rob Kearney I believe hes okay, again were going to offer him 50 or 60, so making the change when we didhe just felt a tiny bit tight at the groin. We just felt it was about time to take off him anyhow.
Kearney raced in Ireland World Cup try with a typical Schmidt, after only 90 seconds.
Ireland laboured throughout the contest, always very likely to seal the triumph but which makes hard work of the final aim.
Schmidts guys now have before confronting Samoa nine days, with Ireland doubtless keen to break some weary bodies.
Despite some frustrations, Schmidt insisted that he remains happy with the scenario of Ireland, with his side still able to top Pool A to Japan despite their shock loss.
I dont believe we lost our strategy from Russia we simply didnt convert a few opportunities, said Schmidt.
I think there were things that pleased me than disappointed me undoubtedly. We started well again, together with two early attempts.
Then we left a bit of hard labour of it. Among the strategies we had was to attempt if people really could to have a few scores early. Since the longer the game goes here the moisture theres on the ball, on the ground and on the air, so we knew it would get more challenging as time went on.
And that was probably a bit of consternation in that third quarter.
Then likely to complete with the best attempt of the night at the conclusion. Just to find that 35-point differential and keep a clean sheet.
