Olympic and world champion Marcel Hirscher has retired after a career which saw him win an eighth successive Alpine Ski World Cup title that past year.
30, the Austrian, is regarded among the best alpine skiers of all time.
He won two medals at the 2018 Winter Olympics and seven World Championships.
However, Hirscher told a press conference on Wednesday that he discovered he had been taking longer to recuperate, adding:”Now is the day when I end my active career”.
“I always wanted to cease while still winning races. I am not prepared anymore to cover the cost.”
Hirscher currently has another Annemarie Moser-Proell, two World Cup titles compared to the 2nd skier ever, that won six.
He began skiing at age two and has been educated by his dad, who’s coached him.
Austrian papers had been conducting headlines on the anticipated retirement of Hirscher, with Wednesday’s Oesterreich tabloid front page reading”Bye Marcel!” Along with the Kronen tabloid resulting in”Thank you Marcel!”
