The National Hockey League All-Star Game (French: Match des ??toiles de la Ligue Nationale de Hockey) is an exhibition ice hockey game that is traditionally held during the regular period of the National Hockey League (NHL), together with many of the League’s star players playing against each other. Each team plays four players. The Game’s earnings benefit the retirement fund of these players.
The NHL All-Star Game, held in late January or early February, marks the symbolic halfway point from the regular season, though not the mathematical halfway point that, for most seasons, is usually one or two months before. Since 2007, it is held in late January. From 1947 to 1968, the All-Star Game primarily saw the previous season’s Stanley Cup champions choose a group of All-Stars from the other clubs. There were two exceptions in this time: The 1951 and 1952 games instead featured two teams of All-Star players, one consisting of gamers on American-based teams and the other with players comprising gamers around Canadian-based teams.
Starting in 1969, the format was geographic with the Wales/Eastern Conference All-Stars enjoying with the Campbell/Western Conference All-Stars, where the”first team”, or starting line, such as the starting goaltender, voted in by fans, while the rest of the teams’ rosters are chosen from the NHL’s Hockey Operations Department in consultation with the groups’ general managers. Since 1996, the head coaches to the two All-Star teams have been the coaches of both teams which are leading their respective conventions in point percentage (i.e. fraction of points obtained out of total possible points). Prior policy observed both head coaches who appeared in the previous year’s Stanley Cup Finals training the All-Star teams.
The 1998 All-Star Game was held at the exact same year since the 1998 Winter Olympics at Nagano, providing the NHL to reveal its players from all over the world. To this extent, the NHL had the All-Star teams consist of a group of North Americans playing with a group of stars from the rest of the planet. The North America vs. World All-Star format lasted through the 2002 Game, the Identical year as the 2002 Winter Olympics, before reverting to the Eastern vs. Western Conference format in 2003.
During the 2010–11 year, the NHL announced a change to the way the teams were selected, modeled following drafts in fantasy sports. The conference Circuit seminar (i.e. East vs. West) strategy was replaced by a participant draft conducted by the All-Star players themselves to determine that the rosters for each group. The captains for every team now select players from a joint pool of the two fan balloting and the NHL Hockey Operations Department. The change in format was a joint effort from the League and the National Hockey League Players Association (NHLPA). This arrangement continued through the 2015 game.
The All-Star Game is preceded by the NHL All-Star Skills Competition, a competition showing the numerous talents of the all-stars. Starting in 2007, the All-Star weekend also featured the NHL YoungStars Game, an exhibition match exclusively featuring rookies, playing slightly modified rules. In 2011 this match was eliminated in favor of having the rookies compete in the skills competition.
