Dele Alli rescued a late stage for Tottenham to refuse visitors Watford a primary Premier League win of the year amid movie assistant referee (VAR) confusion.
Hornets keeper Ben Foster flapped with Alli, at an cross with the out-of-form hosts desperately seeking a way back in the game.
The assistant referee decided it and examined the target was awarded. The screen, however, suggested that the decision has beenno goal. The goal stood.
For large periods before the intervention of Alli, it had looked like Mauricio Pochettinos side were going to suffer a fifth defeat in six matches.
Watford, who lost Danny Welbeck took the lead after home Daryl Janmaats cross swept.
Plus they had a penalty appeal turned down by referee Chris Kavanagh – and the VAR – if Gerard Deulofeu was attracted down by Jan Vertonghen.
However, their wait to get a Premier League win proceeds despite coming close and they stay bottom.
Watford will feel hard done by following VAR controversy.
It seemed like they should have had a penalty when 1-0 up in the first half as the monitoring leg of Vertonghen brought down Deulofeu from the box.
The VAR decided Chris Kavanagh hadnt made a very clear and obvious error. Onedecision has been changed by the VAR from the Premier League all season – using many reversals to factual incidents.
It then seemed as if the Hornets was supplied a reprieve that was late once the large screen statedno intention from the equaliser of Alli – though Kavanagh finally made clear the target had burst.
Players are not allowed to touch the ball before scoring with their arms – accidentally – under the new laws. It was decided, however, the target should stand with the marginal call deeming that the ball had come off the shoulder of Alli.
More to follow.
