Dele Alli rescued a late stage for Tottenham to deny visitors Watford a primary Premier League win of this season amid video helper (VAR) confusion.
Hornets keeper Ben Foster flapped with Alli controlling before turning the ball into the web, at an 86th-minute cross Together with the out-of-form hosts seeking a way back in the match.
The video referee decided it and reviewed the purpose was properly awarded. The large display, however, suggested that the choice wasno purpose. After a spell of confusion, the goal stood.
For large intervals before the intervention of Alli, it had appeared like the side of Mauricio Pochettino were planning to undergo a defeat in six matches.
Watford, who lost Danny Welbeck into an early maternity injury, took the lead when Abdoulaye Doucoure captured home Daryl Janmaats cross.
And they had a strong penalty appeal turned down by referee Chris Kavanagh – along with the VAR – if Gerard Deulofeu was brought down by Jan Vertonghen.
However, their wait to get a Premier League win continues despite coming close and they remain bottom.
Watford will feel hard done by after VAR controversy.
It seemed like they should have had a penalty when 1-0 up in the first half as Vertonghens monitoring leg brought down Deulofeu in the box.
The VAR chose Spurs escaped rather than awarding a punishment Chris Kavanagh hadnt made a error. Oneconclusion has been affected from the VAR from the Premier League all year – using most reversals down to factual incidents like offside.
It then looked as if the Hornets had been extended a reprieve that was late once the screen statedno intention out of the equaliser of Alli – though Kavanagh finally made apparent the goal had burst.
Players are not allowed to touch the ball with their arms – accidentally – . It was decided the aim should stand with all the call deeming the ball had come the shoulder of Alli off.
More to follow.
