Dele Alli rescued a late point for Tottenham to refuse visitors Watford a first Premier League win of the season amid video helper (VAR) confusion.
With the out-of-form hosts urgently seeking a way back Hornets keeper Ben Foster flapped together with Alli, at an 86th-minute cross.
The assistant referee determined it and examined the goal was correctly awarded. The screen suggested that the choice wasno purpose. After a spell of confusion, the goal stood.
For large intervals before the intervention of Alli, it had looked like Mauricio Pochettinos side were going to endure a fifth defeat in six games.
Watford, who dropped Danny Welbeck took the lead when Abdoulaye Doucoure swept the cross of home Daryl Janmaat.
And they had a penalty appeal turned down by referee Chris Kavanagh – along with the VAR – when Jan Vertonghen attracted down Gerard Deulofeu.
However, their wait to get a Premier League win proceeds despite coming agonisingly close and they stay bottom.
Watford will feel hard done by after more VAR controversy.
It seemed like they should have had a penalty when 1-0 up in the first half since Vertonghen leg pulled down Deulofeu from the box.
The VAR chose so Spurs escaped rather than awarding a penalty, Chris Kavanagh hadnt made a clear and obvious error. Just onesubjective conclusion has been affected from the VAR from the Premier League all season – such as offside with reversals to factual incidents.
It seemed like the Hornets was provided a reprieve when the screen statedno goal out of the equaliser of Alli – though Kavanagh made clear the target had burst.
Players are not allowed to touch the ball with their arms – even accidentally – . It was determined that the target should stand with the marginal call deeming that the ball had come off the shoulder of Alli.
More to follow.
