Egypt has been prohibited from the World Championships of weightlifting for doping offences – based on state press – and may be suspended from Tokyo 2020.
Egyptian weightlifters were for the world championships, which start on Wednesday in Thailand, but were lost as soon as the competition’s start book was released on Tuesday.
“The banning is for two years and this means that we will not be able to take part in the Olympics,” Sherif El-Erian, the secretary general of Egypt’s Olympic Committee, advised Al-Ahram paper.
The International Wrestling Federation (IWF) hasn’t supported the ban but its own rules say any country returning more positive tests within a year confronts sanction.
In Cairo, five Egyptian youngsters, including two girls, failed tests in the African Youth and Junior Championships in 2016.
“Once we receive an official letter concerning the ban, we will do our best to solve the crisis,” additional El-Erian.
The World Championships will be the most important qualifying event for Tokyo 2020.
Rio 2016 bronze medallists Mohamed Ehab and Sara Ahmed were set to be the strongest medal contenders at Tokyo of their nation.
